The Oasis Center is an organization that serves the youth of Nashville. It provides a variety of services that seek to empower youth, and encourage them to make positive choices in their daily lives. The Oasis Center believes that adolescents have the power to impact the community at large in positive ways through their ideas, skills, energy, and determination. This particular program of Oasis Center, which will work with your 5th-8th graders, will implement a curriculum known as Teen Outreach Program (TOP) as a way of getting these students involved in their community. International Teen Outreach Program focuses on helping youth of international backgrounds. You can learn more about the Oasis Center at www.oasiscenter.org
Prevention groups at Cameron College Prep will involve students in discussions that are found to be relevant when helping youth make positive life choices. Some of these topics may include: community building, self-esteem, career interest, college interest, diversity, drug and alcohol prevention, making wise decisions, setting goals, preparing for the future, teambuilding, communication, and peer pressure. Students will participate in role plays, games, crafts, and other activities during their group sessions that help them process the importance of such topics, and will have a chance to participate in community service projects after school (transportation provided). As a part of Oasis Center’s programming at CCP, we’ve partnered with Plant the Seed to help provide an opportunity for students to learn to plant, grow, and harvest food by practicing within the school, as well as learning about other food related things like nutrition, healthy choices, food insecurity, etc.
Plant the Seed is a not-for-profit program that creates outdoor classrooms in community and school gardens to educate and empower young people, building cultural connections, advancing economic justice and improving their overall health and well-being.
